Police officer with earpiece

Am I right for the scheme?

Please note: the high potential development scheme will not be accepting any new applications until later in the year.

The high potential development scheme is currently being revised by the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA). The revised scheme will launch in April 2008.

If you would like any further information, please contact the Police Leadership Services team at the NPIA on 020 7021 7070.

Not everybody is right for the police high potential development scheme - find out if you qualify.

We're looking for candidates who exhibit the right attitude, vision, drive and determination needed to face and meet all the challenges that a career at the top levels of the police service brings.

To help you decide if this is for you, try answering these simple questions:

  • Do you welcome responsibility?
  • Could you lead a murder investigation or even the police response to a major emergency?
  • Are you highly self-motivated?
  • Could you manage and motivate hundreds of police officers doing a tough job day to day?
  • Does the notion of change inspire you?
  • Could you push through demanding police reform?
  • Have you ever felt that you wanted to be involved in larger issues?
  • Do you sense that you have the ability to raise your game?

If the answer to two, or more, of the above questions is yes, then you may be right for the HPD scheme.

Do you qualify?

Anyone who has been accepted for standard entry to the police can apply. Here's a basic rundown of who and what we're looking for:

  • new applicants to the police that stand out during initial assessment
  • existing officers up to the rank of chief inspector who show real potential
  • part-time officers who show potential
  • no formal educational or other qualifications are required, but scheme members without degree level qualification will need to undertake academic study
  • no preference is given to any individual, but applications are especially welcome from women and black and minority ethnic groups.
